The Professional Diploma Programme in Communication Disorders and Sciences features an interdisciplinary approach to Speech and Language Pathology. It introduces students to foundation knowledge and theories in linguistics, speech-language pathology, hearing sciences and anatomy and physiology, as well as providing students with an appreciation of the multidisciplinary team and clinical approaches in managing various groups with communication disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Speech Sound Disorder (SSD), Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), Craniofacial Disorder, Hearing Impairment, Motor Speech Disorder (MSD) and Fluency Disorder. The programme also aims to provide students with exposure to real clinical contexts and an appreciation of integrating theory to clinical practice.

The programme is offered in part-time study mode which covers a normal period of one academic year. All classes are evening or weekend classes.
Students are required to complete one core course and five elective courses within the normal study period. For graduation, students are required to attain a minimum of 70% attendance and pass all assessments in each course, and obtain a cumulative overall GPA of not lower than 2.0.

Prof. PEREIRA Valerie Jane is Assistant Professor and Deputy Chief of the Division of Speech Therapy, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, CUHK. She is the Clinical Director of the MSc in SLP program and Program Director of the Professional Diploma in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She has over 20 years of clinical and research experience in communication sciences and disorders. Her clinical and research interests center around speech sound and velopharyngeal function disorders (focusing also on cleft lip and palate), cultural and linguistic diversity, and applying the WHO’s ICF framework in assessment and treatment of paediatric speech and/or language disorders. She has received several grants, including a major grant, for her research work and continues to collaborate at both a national and international level with colleagues from the UK, Australia, Brazil, and Sweden. She continues to publish her work in peer-reviewed journals and books. Her teaching philosophy is closely allied to that of the Faculty of Medicine, which is to transform student’s passion into professional and ethical perfection.
Teaching and learning strategies include lectures, tutorials, online learning activities, laboratory demonstration and practice, student-led presentations, discussions, case studies, projects, visits, case observations, fieldwork and reflective activities as appropriate.
Assessments include individual or group assignments, presentations, attendance and examination as appropriate.
Graduates of the programme with a result of not lower than ‘B-’ in the following course(s) may apply for the course and unit exemption when studying the Master of Science Programme in Speech-Language Pathology offered by our department:
Course and unit exemption up to 9 units for MSc Programme in Speech-Language Pathology shall be granted for students who have
HK$ 16,000 per course (HK$ 96,000 for the whole programme)
Applicants shall have obtained a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university.
Applicants should have a right of abode in Hong Kong.
