Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Dr Jong Woo Chung graduated from the Seoul National University College of Medicine. He then pursued his medical residency and Ph.D. in Otolaryngology at the Seoul National University, where he trained in general otology, skull base surgery, and cochlear implantation. He moved to Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine where he developed skull base surgery, audiology, and cochlear implantation, and started basic research of noise induced hearing loss.
The team for cochlear implantation started in 1999 pioneered by Dr. K-S Lee. The team has reached 1,500 cases in 2017 under Dr Chung’s leadership. He is now the chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
He served as the President of the Korean Audiological Society during 2014-2016 and the President of the Korean Skull Base Society during 2017.
Along with his colleagues at Asan Medical Center, Dr Chung is conducting several clinical studies on sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear implantation, chronic ear disease, and otitis media of children.
Recently, He is involved in the development of the robot surgery in ear surgery, artificial intelligence, and endoscopic ear surgery.

João Flávio NOGUEIRA

Dr Joao Flavio Nogueira is one of the proponents of endoscopic ear surgery (EES). He has produced books on endoscopic middle ear anatomy (2010), and endoscopic management of cholesteatoma (2011). He has also published widely on endoscopic techniques for various endoscopic sinus, skull base and ear procedures. He is known for his 3D surgical techniques in sinus and ear surgeries. Also, he was one of the editors of the best selling edition of the “Otolaryngology Clinics of North America” on endoscopic ear surgery (2013).

Nirmal PATEL

Nirmal is a founding member of the Sydney Endoscopic Ear Surgery Research Group. The group has a Fellowship program in EES based at Nirmal's Kolling Deafness Research Lab. He is the International Working Group on Endoscopic Ear Surgery Board member for Australia and New Zealand and has been actively performing and teaching EES for 5 years. Nirmal has performed over 700 Endoscopic Ear Surgery cases.

Dr Victor ABDULLAH BSc (Hons), MBBS (London), FRCS (England), FRCS (Edinburgh), FCSHK, FHKCORL, FHKAM (Otol) graduated from the former Charing Cross & Westminster Hospital, now Imperial College (London) in 1985. During his medical school days, he took an intercalated year to further his research experience at Middlesex Hospital of the University of London. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in1982. He developed an interest in ENT, Head and Neck Surgery during his clinical years and confirmed his interest when he undertook an Elective attachment as a student at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London in 1984. During his internship, he spent three months of his Surgical Training in Ear Nose and Throat Surgery which took his interest in the subject further. After spending four years of training in ENT at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, London, 1988-1992 during which he completed his registrar training and obtained his FRCS (England), he returned to Hong Kong to further his advanced training under Professor Charles Andrew van Hasselt at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and has served the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong since then.
Dr ABDULLAH's interests are in Paediatric Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery and Surgery for Sleep Apnoea. He remains committed to Public Service and takes a strong interest in teaching and training.
He is presently the Consultant and Cluster Chief of Service, Department of Ear Nose and Throat, United Christian Hospital, an affiliated unit of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, serving a population of one million in Kwun Tong and Tsuen Kwan O, Kowloon East Cluster. He is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor, Chief of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology of the University Department.

Dr. LAI graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. He completed his residency training in otorhinolaryngology in Hong Kong. His main interest is facial plastics and head and neck reconstruction. He received subspecialty training from the attachment to Chang Gung Memorial hospital in Taiwan and the Facial nerve center at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.
Dr. LAI is currently a team member of the facial plastic division of CUHK and is actively participating in facial palsy management and facial reanimation surgery.

Dr LAM graduated from the medical school of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993. He has been a Trainer for the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists since 2000. His special interests are otology, neurotology and implant surgery. He is a senior surgeon of the CUHK Cochlear Implant Team. He also lectures and demonstrates surgery at local and international conferences and workshops.

Dr Alex Lee received his medical degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He completed his specialist training in Prince of Wales Hospital and United Christian Hospital. He is an Associated Consultant in Tuen Mun Hospital and Honorary Clinical Tutor of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His special interest is in middle ear surgery and lateral skullbase surgery.

Dr Alice KY Siu MBChB (CUHK) FRCSEd(ORL) FHKCORL, FHKAM(Otol), MMed(Paed) graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in year 2005. After she attained her fellowship in 2013, Dr Siu sub-specialises in paediatric otorhinolaryngology. She is a local expert in paediatric airway diseases, voice disorders and rare congenital conditions. Dr Siu is active in introducing new and minimal invasive technologies into the paediatric group, such as in TEES and balloon dilatation of the sinus and the airway, as she believes in the preservation of growth potentials in children. Dr Siu teaches in three universities and is a regular tutor of the Institute of Advanced Nursing Studies. Dr Siu reads about nutritional science and paediatric educational psychology at her pastime.

John SUNG

Professor Michael C.F. TONG, Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, is specialized in the fields of otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. Paralleled with that, his interest has extended to the broader field of medicine – epidemiology and public health especially in elderly health. Having led the clinical research team, he has numerous successful grants and over 300 publications, which has resulted in a national and international reputation of his Department in the field of general otology, cochlear and auditory brainstem implantation and nasopharyngeal cancer research. With reference to this workshop, he is also leading a research team of clinicians and speech pathologists/ therapists in the study of pathophysiology and treatment of patients with swallowing difficulties. Development of new techniques of minimally invasive surgery in ORLHNS has also been his recent interest. Professor TONG is also regularly visiting regional centres in the past fifteen years to share his clinical and surgical experience in hearing implants. He has organized a number of international conferences and co-founded the Chinese Academy of ORLHNS that runs biannual meeting in different cities in greater China. Apart from teaching, research and clinical work, Professor TONG advocates community service to educate the public on health issues related to ear, nose and throat. As Founder and Chairman of a non-profit organization, the Hear Talk Foundation, he enlists voluntary service from the professionals offering service to the underprivileged. The Foundation operates regular charitable missions to mainland China to provide free medical and surgical treatment to the poor.

She is currently a resident specialist at Queen Mary Hospital with special interest in diseases of the ear.
