New Tech to Treat Head and Neck Cancer

2021-09-09

Head and neck cancer is the 7th most common cancer in the world, causing 450,000 deaths every year.

Medical and engineering experts from CUHK and HKU develop a robotic device that is largely made of a special form of plastic which is bendable, highly flexible and can remove tumours in throats more precisely. With real-time imaging, surgeons will have an accurate idea that they are removing the tumour to the depth they want to achieve, while preserving structures that they do not want to damage.

This innovation has just been reported in the international journal Science Robotics.
