7th World Chinese Academy of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Conference was held in Macau.
2018
Department ran its first Transoral Thyroidectomy Workshop.
Division of Speech Therapy introduced the Master of Science Programme in Speech-Language Pathology. Graduates are expected to be equipped with knowledge to serve as speech therapists to manage the diverse populations with communication disorders and dysphagia at various medical and educational settings, both domestically and globally.
2017
Department received Dr. Wayne F. Larrabee Jr., Director, Larrabee Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, U.S.A. under the Distinguished Scholar Scheme.
As the congress secretariat and a co-organizer, Department run the Rhinology World Congress – Hong Kong 2017.
Division of Speech Therapy introduced the Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Communication Disorders and Sciences. The programme was very well-received and trained professionals to manage people with communication and swallowing disorders in the Chinese-speaking population.
2016
Department developed and released the Cantonese Spoken Word Recognition Test (CanSWORT), a validated assessment tool for spoken word recognition ability in Cantonese and applicable to paediatric population as young as 3 years of age, with hearing sensitivity ranging from profound impairment to typical, and with or without using hearing device(s).
Department underwent a review on teaching and research by a Visiting Committee.
Department received Professor Michael G. Stewart, Weill Cornell Medical College, U.S.A. under the Distinguished Scholar Scheme.
Department ran the Hong Kong International Sialendoscopy and Salivary Gland Conference for the first time.
2015
Department developed the specialised technique for total endoscopic ear surgery. The technique is shared with surgeons in Hong Kong and from overseas through various training workshops in the following years.
2014
The first Head and Neck Dissection and Reconstruction Course, now an annual event, was conducted.
2013
Professor Michael Tong received 耳鼻喉科深港合作項目獎之繼續教育獎awarded by Shenzhen Sixth People’s Hospital (Nanshan Hospital) in organizing國家級繼續教育項目“顳骨解剖與復聽手術最新進展學習班” (Continued Medical Education Project at the national level: Temporal Bone Dissection & Lecture Course on Latest Developments in Ear Surgeries”) jointly with the hospital.
Department co-organised the Fourth World Chinese Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Conference in Hong Kong with the World Chinese Academy of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
Social Thinking Handbook (II): About "Critical Vocabulary" 社交思考實用手冊(II) - 解構「關鍵提示」was launched.
2012
Department organised a launching seminar with Professor Kathy Lee introducing test administration and clinical application of the Cantonese Tone Identification Test (CanTIT). CanTIT is a validated and standardised assessment tool for measuring tone perception ability of the Cantonese-speaking population and could be applied to the whole range of population from children to adult for research and clinical purpose.
Department performed the first bonebridge bone conduction implantation in Asia.
2011
CUHK Affiliated Academic Unit of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery established at the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, enhancing academic and research development as well as service delivery within the specialty of ENT and related disciplines between CUHK and the hospital.
Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Collaborations with the Shenzhen Otolaryngology Institute, Longgang, Shenzhen, China.
Department developed “ACEHearing”, a patented hearing-assistance and test technology that can be incorporated into smartphones, in partnership with Ximplar Ltd. This world’s first hearing technology to integrate hearing test and custom sound enhancement won the Bronze Award and Audience Choice Award at The Wall Street Journal Asian Innovation Awards 2011.
Professor Michael Tong performed the first auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) using an advanced device which comes with a removable magnet and that patients are able to undergo regular high resolution magnetic resonance imaging scans, without demagnetization and magnet-induced image artifacts, allowing for effective ongoing medical treatment for the ABI recipients.
2010
Department jointly organised, with the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, the inaugural Hong Kong Speech and Hearing Symposium.
Commissioned by the Centre of Psycho-pedagogical Support and Special Education of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Macau SAR, the Department conducted the first skills-training course for school teachers in Macau who are involved in teaching students with speech or communication disabilities.
The Department was invited to perform the first bone anchored hearing aid implantation in China.
2009
Department co-organised the Second World Chinese Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Conference in Macau with the World Chinese Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Federation and Macao Association of Otorhinolaryngology (now renamed the World Chinese Academy of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery).
Department established The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Shenzhen Nanshan Hospital Joint Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Training Centre cum Microsurgical and Endoscopic Skills Laboratory in Shenzhen, China.
Department launched the Certificate Programme in Basic Audiometry to train audiometricians or assistants to optimise the audiological services provided by improving the cost-effectiveness of professional consultations and by ensuring competence of all personnel in the field.
CUHK Affiliated Academic Unit of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery established at the United Christian Hospital to formalise the relationship between CUHK and the hospital and to allow a more systematic framework for further enhancing academic and research development as well as service delivery within the specialty of ENT and related disciplines.
Professor Michael Tong and his team performed the first vibrant soundbridge middle ear implantation in Asia.
Professor C A van Hasselt and Professor Michael Tong performed the first two cochlear implantations using an advanced device with improved in-vivo robustness of the electrode in response to trauma and improved manufacturability of the electrode for paediatric patients in Asia.
Division of Speech Therapy launched a Social Thinking handbook named “社交思考「六面」睇 – ILAUGH 實用手冊” jointly with Caritas – Hong Kong and the Education Bureau, HKSAR.
2008
Department signed Memorandums of Understanding for academic collaboration with three mainland China institutions, namely, the Otolaryngology Hospital of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou; the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Cancer Centre of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou; and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, People’s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Collaborations with the House Ear Institute, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.
Professor Michael Tong and his team implanted the first totally implantable hearing aid in Asia.
Department organised Lecture Course and Workshop on Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES), now a regular event, for local ENT surgeons and speech therapists.
2007
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery officially formed in August and became a full academic department of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The Department continued to reinforce academic exchanges and to promote training and medical research with institutes in mainland China. A Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Collaborations was signed with the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, Shenzhen Sixth People’s Hospital (Nanshan Hospital).
2006
Division organised a launching seminar with Professor Kathy Lee introducing test administration and clinical application of the Cantonese Basic Speech Perception Test (CBSPT). The CBSPT is so far the only validated and standardised assessment tool for measuring basic speech perception ability of the Cantonese-speaking population.
As the result of an international collaborative study, the Division became the copyright holder of the Chinese version of the Rhinitis Symptom Utility Index (RSUI-C). The index, which is a validated measurement tool for the evaluation of rhinitis symptoms, is useful for both clinical and economic studies pertaining to the Chinese population.
Division organised the first International Facial Plastic Training Workshop for ENT Surgeons.
The first CUHK ENT Conference was organised and is now an annual international event.
2005
Division invited to join the Global BAHA Divino Study and asked to perform two cases out of one hundred worldwide, the only Asian group invited.
Professor Kathy Lee’s PhD thesis selected as a winner of CUHK Young Scholars Dissertation Award 2003.
Division elected by the Board of the Asia Pacific Symposium on Cochlear Implant and Related Sciences to organise the 5th Symposium, held in Hong Kong.
2004
Professor Michael Tong appointed Professor (Clinical) at the Department of Surgery and took up the position of Chief of Otorhinolaryngology.
The three academic/research centres set up in 2001 integrated to form the University’s Institute of Human Communicative Research. The Institute aims to promote and conduct clinical and basic scientific research as well as organizing educational activities for clinicians and the public in the treatment and rehabilitation of hearing, speech and language disorders.
2003
Division organised the first Temporal Bone Dissection and Otology Lecture Course, now a regular event, for local and overseas ENT surgeons.
Division performed the first bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) implantations for irradiated nasopharyngeal cancer patients in Asia.
Division developed Hearing and Speech Assessment Tools for speech therapists in Hong Kong.
Division appointed by the Hospital Authority to organise the first Commissioned Training Programme for its doctors.
2002
Division extended its clinical service to the North District Hospital.
Division authorised to provide Family Physicians Training Programme in the field of ENT for all family medicine trainees of the Hospital Authority.
Division established Academic Exchange Scheme in Otology in China.
Division developed the first 3D graphic animated bone anchored hearing aid implantation which is solely licensed to the University for educational instruction.
2001
Division set up three self-financed academic/research centres for the prospective Institute of Human Communicative Research at the University.

2000
Division organised the National and International Head and Neck Cancer Congress jointly with the China Anticancer Association. The Congress is held in China biennially for local and overseas ENT surgeons.
Division, together with the Division of Neurosurgery of the Department of Surgery, successfully performed the first two auditory brainstem implantations in Asia.
The number of cochlear implantations performed at the Prince of Wales Hospital exceeded one hundred.
1999
Division provided hospital-based family medicine (ENT) training to the Hospital Authority doctors rotating through Accident and Emergency specialty at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Division extended its clinical service to the Tseung Kwan O Hospital.
A book chapter titled “Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma” published in Diseases of the Head and Neck, Nose and Throat written by Professor C. A. van Hasselt awarded the George Davey Howells Memorial Prize in Otolaryngology.
1998
Division introduced computer-assisted (imaged guided) sinus surgery – a quantum leap forward in treating sinus disease.
1997
Division extended its clinical service to the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.
1996
Division received a donation from the Matilda Charities Fund for support in setting up a cochlear implantation centre at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Division established Bone Anchored Hearing Aid and Craniofacial Osseointegration Programmes at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Division conducted the first Joint Intercollegiate Higher Specialist Examination of the RCSEd (the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) and HKCORL (the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists) in Hong Kong.
1995
Division held the first Certificate Course on ENT Diseases and Related Nursing Care for nurses in Hong Kong.
Annual Visiting Professors in Otorhinolaryngology Programme established.
1994
Audiology Centre and Speech Therapy Unit were established at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Division organised the first Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Workshop for local and overseas ENT surgeons.
1993
Professor C. A. van Hasselt appointed the first Professor of Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) in Hong Kong.
Professor C. A. van Hasselt contributed in the establishment of Nasopharyngeal Cancer Research Foundation within Faculty of Medicine.
Professor C. A. van Hasselt was a Steering Committee Member for the formation of the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists dedicated to formulating guidelines for ENT basic and higher training.
1992
Division introduced a new cancer treatment, photodynamic therapy, for the second most common cancer in the territory – nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Division extended its clinical service to the United Christian Hospital.
Division started to organise regular ENT attachment programmes for members of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians.
Dr C. A. van Hasselt developed the “Hong Kong Flap”, an innovative technique for restructuring radical mastoid cavities, and introduced it to the international community. The technique is now practised worldwide.
1991
Division organised the first Update Course for the Hong Kong College of General Practitioners (now renamed the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians). These Update Courses are now regular fixtures in the College’s educational programme.
1990
Division initiated the Nasopharyngeal Cancer Screening Programme.
Dr C. A. van Hasselt contributed in the formation of the Hong Kong Surgical Laser Association.
Dr C. A. van Hasselt was a Steering Committee Member forming the Hong Kong Society of Sleep Medicine.
1989
Division organised the Course on Functional Microsurgery of the Ear jointly with the Georges Portmann Institute for local and overseas ENT surgeons.
Division introduced implantable bone conduction hearing aids.
1986
Division of Otorhinolaryngology established under the Department of Surgery and Dr C. A. van Hasselt appointed Chief of Otorhinolaryngology.
